Malaysian hardwood is taken from the same tree that produces the latex to make rubber. The tree is native to Brazil, and is used in plantations in Malaysia. Seedlings were taken to Malaysia in 1877, and by 1992 there were about 1.8 million hectares of rubberwood trees.

Malaysian Rubber – comprising 12 of the 14 states in the Malaysian federation – is among the world’s most important rubber growing areas. Rubber is also grown in Sabah (formerly North Borneo) and Sarawak, which, known together as East Malaysia make up Malaysia.

Malaysia had also become a large plywood exporter (later second in tropical plywood exports only to Indonesia). The Malaysian Wood, called meranti in Malaysia.
, is the largest internationally traded tropical hardwood product, used in Japan for concrete pouring forms and construction and in the US for facing of interior doors, paneling, sub flooring.
